In the Triad
The Piedmont Triad Airport Authority has a new chairman. Two Guilford County charter schools will have to redraw their lotteries. Winston-Salem is officially “The City of Arts and Innovation.” Speaking of innovation, a new company is moving into the downtown Winston-Salem Innovation Quarter. Look for more food trucks in Greensboro this spring and summer, thanks to relaxed regulations. Meet Janet Echelman, the internationally renewed artist who has been commissioned to create the centerpiece structure for Center City Park.
In the Charlotte Area
Those new outlet stores have over 900 service jobs available. The new Publix in Mathews is almost ready to open. Airfares at Charlotte-Douglas are above the national average. A new mixed-use development is coming to Moore Road and Idlewild Road. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has subpoenaed records from Mecklenburg County’s government, in relation to their investigation on former mayor Patrick Cannon.
In the Triangle Area
The grit and greatness of Durham’s Warehouse District(which has so many names I can’t keep up). A prominent building on Raleigh’s Glenwood Avenue, near Five Points will be replaced with a newer office building. Wake County Schools is asking for $1.3 billion in its new budget, which includes teacher raises. A new 7-story apartment building has been approved for Raleigh’s Hillsborough Street. Downtown Raleigh’s William Peace University is under fire for lack of student services, poorly maintained facilities and a president who doesn’t appear to care. A new solar farm is coming to Durham County. Salaries were the hot topic at last night’s Durham school board candidate forum.
In Asheville and Western North Carolina
Asheville City Schools has named a new superintendent. Asheville City Council has approved an anti-graffiti plan.
In Fayetteville, Wilmington and Eastern North Carolina
Fayetteville State University honored their founders recently. Cumberland County Schools has decided to not enact the new teacher tenure plan. The governor has appointed a Wilmington attorney to lead the port authority board. Pender County officials are considering an airport extension.
Statewide
A judge will rule if school districts who sued over enforcing the teacher tenure law will be temporarily relieved of the law, it will take 10 billion dollars and 30 years for Duke Energy to convert the current coal ash ponds and remove the coal ash from the waters where it is, to a more environmentally safe method. The website SafeWise has named its list of the safest towns in the state.
