What You Need to Know About North Carolina for June 5, 2015

It’s First Friday. I’m learning that many cities across the country do this art gallery thing every first Friday of the month, so it’s not something I’ll miss too much in changing cities. But this is my last Greensboro crawl for a while. And for that I’m sad. But, there’s news to share, so let’s get right into that:

Duke Energy shut down an old plant in Chatham County, where they plan to store coal ash deposits from its other plants around the state.

Areas of methane have been found near an old stadium in Winston-Salem, but Winston-Salem State University may still purchase the property.

The Republican Party is holding its state convention this weekend in Raleigh.

A major economic development organization in the western part of the state will shut down after 21 years, due to cuts in state funding.

More bike tours and races are happening in Western North Carolina as well.

The charges have been made against UNC-Chapel Hill. Punishments have yet to be announced, but are coming.

You can now take Uber a bit further from Charlotte.

The state board of education has approved 12 new charter schools. One of them is the state’s first all-girls public charter school, in Wilmington.

And finally, Southern Living’s annual barbecue list is here. We have two spots on it. Go eat.
